E4E-New York Statement on New Data, Showing NYC Reads Is On the Right Track

Marielys Divanne, Executive Director of Educators for Excellence–New York, issued the following statement in response to the recently released NYC Reads screener data:

"The newly released NYC Reads screener data sends a clear message: students are making real, measurable progress—and it’s thanks to the tireless collaboration among NYCPS leadership, the UFT, the city’s educators, parents, and the broader community. They’ve embraced high-quality materials and professional learning through NYC Reads, and it’s paying off.

“It’s rare to see gains this early—across grades, among our youngest learners, and for students with disabilities. Research shows it typically takes 3–5 years to see academic results from curriculum shifts. Yet in just one to two years, New York City—the nation’s largest and most complex school system—is already seeing encouraging progress. That’s not just remarkable. It’s groundbreaking and nationally significant.

“This data demonstrates why we must stay the course with NYC Reads and double down on the similar investments made in math through NYC Solves. We must continue to build on this early progress and listen to educators every step of the way, who have been loud and clear that they want both of these initiatives to stick and be strengthened

“This early success is a testament to what’s possible when educators are placed at the center of instructional change, and when there’s a high-quality, coherent approach to instruction that’s supported with PL and coaching. City leaders—now and in the future—must commit to sustaining, strengthening, and continuously expanding NYC Reads and NYC Solves, so we can deliver for all students.”
